This in depth guide to ayahuasca is a remarkable and much needed addition to the existing literature and accounts on ayahuasca currently available. This second edition also adds a beautiful and important two chapters on sustaining awareness of safety and responsible medicine use - which completes an already seemingly complete guidebook on ayahuasca usage!I have probably read all or almost all of the books available on the topic of ayahuasca over the past 7 years. While there have been a few excellent books, most of them are focused on adventures of seekers, personal accounts and experiential reports, with a couple of books focused on the study of the Amazonian world view. This is not a bad thing, but I have been waiting for something more and this book provides it. It brings a much needed depth for the serious seeker, looking to approach ayahuasca ceremonies for deep healing. It is a guide on all things ayahuasca related, but its strength lies in its focus on the suggested mental, spiritual and emotional preparation and approach to working with this extraordinary sacrament.The book is quite personal in places, offering what he found to be the most helpful for his own unfolding and inner work. If someone, born and raised in western society, is going to approach this medicine for deep healing of wounds and the malaise of common western thought patterns, some of the popular approaches to ayahuasca and shamanism in general can at times be slightly limiting, in my opinion. Regueiro’s work adds a fresh outlook, building upon indigenous wisdom by utilizing sometimes Jungian and non-dual approaches in dealing with our fractures and wounds. In my own inner work, I have found these approaches incredibly beneficial and wholesome, so this book really resonates with me. This does not mean that this book discards all conventional wisdom as built up through the ages in the amazon, but rather adds to it in a very meaningful way, and re-frames many of the methods and myths surrounding the use of it to be rather approachable. There is also an explicit invitation to use one’s own discernment and intuition regarding what is “right†for the individual, which I find highly appealing as it avoids an authoritarian view.In a nutshell, this is the one of the only books I would recommend someone read before embarking on their first ayahuasca ceremony, and in my opinion, it is a book that everyone currently working with sacred plants should consider reading for a review of what their current work is bringing them. Very important work and much needed at this juncture in time!
I bought the audio book version which is somewhat unpleasant to listen to due to bass tones of the narrator’s voice, which my excellent speakers don’t reproduce very well, creating a painful low boom. I got used to it now, and listen to this book without enthusiasm just to finish it.The book is written in the kind of generalized new agey language that uses a lot of general ideas like “responsibilityâ€, “facing your fearsâ€, “trust yourself†etc, and has few concrete details. This book doesn’t provide a lot of important details and information to someone who wants to try ayahuasca for the first time. The lack of concrete descriptions and details makes me question the author, his authority on the subject and experience with it. He could be just any guy from a Spanish speaking country who is somewhat familiar with ayahuasca, but far from being an expert. He also doesn’t strike me as someone who benefited a lot from this “healing plant medicineâ€. Again, this is judging by his generalized insights and lack of originality in his thinking and ideas.
I had the pleasure of meeting Javier Regueiro last year in a Manhattan bookstore where he signed my copy of his book and then delivered the most fascinating and mesmerizing lecture/discussion I have ever witnessed by an author. He was so clear and so present and non-judgmental and good-humored.His book is beautifully written and highly informative. Unfortunately (and this seems almost petty to bring up) there are several spelling, grammatical and typographical errors, none of which, happily, detract from the otherwise excellent writing.By the way, the cover art by Harry Chavez cannot help but catch your eye, as will the photograph on the back of the author beaming a radiant and welcoming smile.
I loved this personal, honest, down-to-earth account of the spiritual benefits, and trappings, of ayahuasca medicine work. Javier is honest, forthright and helpful in this book. I highly recommend adding this to your ayahuasca reading list if you're exploring this plant and working with it. Also look for his book on San Pedro/Huachuma if you're working or going to be working with that Andean plant master.
This book is deeply insightful on so many levels. It's rich with transformational, liberating ideas that really rocked my inner world. He lays the foundation for truly meeting the plant medicine of Ayahausca with your eyes and heart open, well prepared and able to receive the most possible from the experience. Beyond the medicine, Javier is a brilliant teacher who has permanently affected how I view the world and myself in it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! And his other book too :) I have both with lots of pencil underlines and notes in the margin :)
