About the Author

Kenny Roy started in the animation industry in 1997 as a dustbuster on a children's animated feature. Since then, he's gone on to animate some of the most memorable characters on screen, from Scooby Doo to King Kong. In 2007 he founded Arconyx Animation Studios in Los Angeles, CA where he directs projects ranging from TV commercials to short films to visual FX. An animation teacher for almost 8 years, Kenny is also a multiple-published author in animation and a world-traveling lecturer and runs an animation training portal through www.kennyroy.com. I love the book it opens your imagination and ideas not to mention that it teaches you step by step

One of the things that fail me with tutorials is the lack of step-by-step instruction. Not that I’m planning on being a filmmaker because I’m not, but I am interested in the process. Whenever I see anything online, I run up against fragmented, drawn out, and incomplete tutorials. Sometimes the assumption is that one knows a lot more than they do and the tutorial is so poorly done (fast, hard to see, difficult to follow) it’s an exercise in futility. That’s when I’m turned off and will turn away.Not so with Kenny Roy’s tutorial. There are the basics here such as the introductory material to the short film and the like. If you want to make a film, read this material. It’s not there as a filler and will help you get on board and brainstorm your own material for a film. Just having an idea is not always enough. I even learned a few things simply from reading the introduction. For example, Bill Kroyer immediately caught my attention with what he calls the “three steps of successful animation:”1. Idea!2. Communication!3. Captivate!Obviously these three steps are a no brainer if you want to really be a filmmaker using Maya rather than someone who dabbles in Movie Maker. Once the basics are out of the way, that’s when the book explodes. There you’ll find a step-by-step tutorial with real screen shots. For example, if you want to blend shapes you’re going to actually see how to work with them. FYI, the index is very thorough, something I really like to see in any book, but is doubly important in a tutorial.There are cool sidebars with things like interviews with Michael Cawood, Tomer Eshed and Omer Ben David. It’s always interesting to “listen” to people who have been successful in mastering their craft. In the back of the book there’s the finished short in a DVD, an index, a glossary, and an awesome festival list that includes website address. I downloaded the fully-functional 30-day trial of Maya for 64-bit Windows from the Autodesk site (Note: There's no 32-bit trial available and at about 7GB+ it took a good couple of hours to download).The book assumes prior experience with Maya. I'm comfortable with graphics, CAD and imaging software and, after spending a couple of days with Autodesk's downloadable Maya tutorials to get my bearings, I was able to follow along with the book's tutorials quite easily.What I enjoyed most about the book is the way it immersed me in what the author calls the `typical studio pipeline', vividly giving a sense of the big picture, all the roles and processes - manual as well as digital - that go into a short animated film production.The first four chapters don't really touch on Maya at all but rather define the short film genre, story development concepts including: storyboarding techniques, key pre-production decisions such as what and how much material to create versus download, how to integrate those resources into Maya, connecting them to controllers and enabling the animation process.This was so much more revealing and interesting than an isolated collection of technical tricks and effects. The book is beautifully illustrated with plenty of screenshots, but it's meant more as a `shop guide' for people who know what they want to do and are looking for direction, rather than a book out to impress readers with the capabilities of Maya per se. I think that big-picture workfow-oriented perspective will keep readers engaged and confident they're going to walk away having learned something new and valuable, regardless of experience level.The later chapters offer more specialized tutorials illustrating rendering, compositing, lighting effects and sound. The idea is to feel as though you're following along side by side as the author explains his creative decisions in the hope you'll take those lessons and apply them to your own work.Finally, there's a repeating series of fixed question interviews throughout the book with working producers of shorts that give the book's content a grounded, practical feel. This window into the `real world' is certain to inspire anyone looking to get into the field.

The book has some solid perspectives. And having worked at one of the companies mentioned by the author, I can see how the advice given in this book permeated the culture. So, this book definitely contains effective strategies. However, I think this misses a big piece of the puzzle. The connotation of "difficult" is used throughout the book, where it may be more apt to say "different", "troubled", or "temporarily hampered". It does not take any perspective besides the neurotypical. It expects people to conform or get out. But, I think it would be more productive to talk about how to make systems and groups that work for people who are outside the norm due to giftedness, or other such challenges. And I think it'd be great for it to have acknowledged that, sometimes, the needs of the individual are not accounted for easily in the system. It did discuss the impact of valuing all kinds of people, and it touched on the potential that some "difficult" people can offer. But I think there are deeper wells to divine here.

Leading the Unleadable is one of the most insightful and creative books on leadership, I have ever read.Alan’s theme – his three-fold personal mental model, if you will – is a must for every leader, no matter their station in their given organization.He asserts and rightfully so, to treat yourself as a business of one person who is choosing to provide services to your employer in exchange for the company’s choice to pay you.In running this business of “me”, he offers three significant mindset shifts.1. Provide great return on investment to my employer.For me to be successful, my employer must be successful. Instead of simply “get stuff done” I must instead “have great positive impact on the business.”2. Improve me. Any business must be focused on the now and on the future. My new mindset changed to think of every investment in time I made as having to be beneficial to my employer but also to myself.3. Seek opportunities to dramatically improve your business. With the mindset shift, you will be thinking about the overall business and where you can provide the most impact. You will be pitching new ideas and initiatives that further the business of you, and the business that you own or are employed by.Having coached over 500 CEOs and senior executives, I can tell you this mindset is pure gold. The entire book is a gem. Every page is loaded with unusual but pertinent insights. Read it, and then read it again. You will not be sorry.

For first time managers it might be a good read but not for experienced folks who are thinking there are some new tricks in this book.

This is my first book on leadership, so I didn't know what to expect from it. Furthermore, what I was looking for were actually practical examples of how to deal with difficult people, and not as much about leadership.The book had that, but the focus seemed to be more on "leading" then on "the unleadable".I however don't feel like punishing the book with a lower score because of the slight mismatch between the title and the content. It was a good book, I din't want to get pedantic about it.Just be careful about your expectations.Bonus! I received an extra chapter from "Talking to crazy" at the end. That book really seems like it's about handling difficult people, so I might check that out.I don't have too much to say about this book, even though I took maybe hundreds of notes (on kindle). It's all just reasonable good advice...stuff you'd probably find in a lot of places. I found the BS level to be quite low, so the author seems to really talk from experience, and not after imagining how straw-people work and drawing on flipcharts.It's a short read, I recommend it for people who chose to/ended up leading others, people who have bosses and want to understand what pressures their bosses face, and people who are easily annoyed by others :pAlso further recommendation on how to deal with difficult people or people who don't know how to express themselves: "How to argue: powerfully, persuasively, politely" (...or something like thst). That helps in ending arguments very fast and very constructively.

This books gives a really good layout on how to approach management, especially for new managers. Willett does go over how to deal with difficult people, but does not spend as much time as the title suggest. Managing difficult people is only a portion of a manager's job. This book gives a broader view of management and leadership.

It was a good book. It provides overall leadership advice and project management tips (lots of it). But if you are looking for specifics because you were attracted to the title you will be disappointed.

A very valuable book that serves as a terrific toolbox and roadmap for the top leadership skill of managing high performers, star talent, and difficult people. If you are a leader managing people, you will use this book often.

Alan says first you must choose to become an exceptional leader; then it will become fun and rewarding. Leading the Unleadable has inspiring insight and practical guidance on how to fine tune your radar to detect trouble early, manage some of the most challenging situations and even prevent them.
